Alice in Wonderland

Posted in News on June 22, 2009 by Gryphon08

Tim Burton has conjured up his own version of Alice in Wonderland for movie goers to enjoy in regular theaters, IMAX, and Disney Digital 3D on March 5, 2010.

The film still retains the style from Lewis Carroll’s original look, but “It has been Burton-ized” (is how producer Richard Zanuck describes the director’s vision of the Lewis Carroll classic). After a 40 day shoot the live action is now being merged with CG animation and motion-capture creatures, and then transferred into 3-D.

Linda Woolverton has infused the traditional tale with a blast of girl power:

Mia Wasikowska plays Alice, a 17 year old girl that attends a party at a Victorian estate only to find she is about to be proposed to in front of hundreds of snooty society types. Off she runs, following a white rabbit into a hole and ending up in Wonderland, a place she visited 10 years before yet doesn’t remember.

Mia Wasikowska as Alice Kingsley.

“There is something real, honest and sincere about her,” Zanuck says about Wasikowska. “She’s not a typical Hollywood starlet.”

Johnny Depp plays the Mad Hatter. (This image is sure to haunt your nightmares for months to come).

“This character is off his rocker.” “He is so much fun and so nutty, I can’t imagine anyone else doing it,” said Zanuck. Depp transforms into yet another bizarre character, adopting an accent that is indescribable.

Helena Bonham Carter plays the tyrant Red Queen.

“The creatures are ready to revolt and waiting for Alice to help them,” said Zanuck.

The benevolent White Queen, played by Anne Hathaway.

She’s “beautiful but over the top. She doesn’t walk. She floats. She’s very eccentric,” Zanuck.

Also joining the cast in Burton’s visually surreal Alice in Wonderland are Alan Rickman as the Caterpillar, and Christopher Lee as the Jabberwock.

As to be expected the film contains Tim Burton’s characteristic ghoulishness — Helena Bonham Carter’s Red Queen, whose favorite retort is “Off with their heads,” has a moat filled with bobbing noggins.

However, Zanuck assures most kids can handle it. “The book itself is pretty dark,” he notes. “This is for little people and people who read it when they were little 50 years ago.”

And only one warrior stands between the dark and the light: Saya, a half-human, half-vampire samurai who preys on those who feast on human blood. Joining forces with the shadowy society known as the Council, Saya is dispatched to an American military base, where an intense series of swordfights leads her to the deadliest vampire of all. And now after 400 years, Saya’s greatest hunt is about to begin.”

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen — Factoids, Qutoes, and a Ton of New TV Spots

Posted in News on June 18, 2009 by Gryphon08

The wait is almost over for Transformers fans with the June 24th release of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen just around the corner. To tide fans over here are some factoids, quotes, and a slew of new TV spots (too many to post — be sure to check out Michael Bay’s Blog for a ton more).

Fun Facts — Robots

  • 14 robots last time, 46 robots this time (ILM only)
  • If you had all the gold ever mined in the history of man, you could build a little more than half of Devastator.
  • Optimus Prime will be life size on IMAX screens in many forest fight shots.
  • Devastator’s hand is traveling 390 miles per hour when he punches the pyramid.
  • The pyramid destruction simulation was 8 times bigger than the old rigid simulation all-time record holder at ILM.
  • All robot parts laid out end to end would stretch from one side of California to the other, about 180 miles
  • Devastator’s parts stacked tip to tip would be as tall as 58 empire state buildings.
  • If all the texture maps on the show were printed on 1 square yard sheets, they would cover 13 football fields.

You have to see it in IMAX!

“The way to see this movie is on IMAX. Never before has there been 4k rendered character animation shot on full IMAX 70 mm film. This is a first and the results are stunning. You will see Optimus Prime in a few shots where he is actually perfectly to scale on the IMAX 50 foot tall screens.

For IMAX, I created a slightly longer cut with more robot fighting. Four scenes were shot on IMAX cameras so the screen will fill the full IMAX screen for these scenes.

Haters beware.

Michael”
